Gloucester's So Salty
January 24–25, 2026 · Downtown Gloucester · Free
Join us in celebrating the fish city's recognizably salty character. Sponsored by the Cape Ann Museum in partnership with Discover Gloucester, this beloved two-day winter festival brings over 2,000 people to the downtown area each January to shop at local stores, enjoy family-friendly activities, and find ice sculptures sponsored by local cultural institutions and businesses scattered throughout downtown.
Live music, salty treats, special offers from Main Street shops, and engaging cultural activities make So Salty a winter highlight on Cape Ann — proof that Gloucester's creative spirit doesn't hibernate.

Late June
St. Peter's Fiesta
June 24 - 28, 2026 · St. Peter's Square & throughout Gloucester
The St. Peter's Fiesta is a vibrant and deeply rooted celebration honoring the patron saint of fishermen — a testament to Gloucester's strong Italian-American heritage and its long-standing connection to the sea. This multi-day festival brings the entire community together to celebrate traditions, faith, and the vital role that fishing has played in Gloucester's history.
The most iconic event is the Greasy Pole Contest, a thrilling spectacle where daring participants attempt to walk across a heavily greased pole suspended over the harbor. The festival also features the solemn and moving Blessing of the Fleet, religious processions, traditional Italian fare, live music, and a festive atmosphere that draws locals and visitors alike.

Block Parties
July 11, August 7 & September 4, 2026 · 6:00 – 10:00 PM · Main Street · Free
Three summer nights, one closed-off stretch of Main Street, and the whole community out on the pavement. The Greater Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce's block parties transform downtown Gloucester into an open-air celebration — live music, street performers, food vendors, family-friendly activities, and dozens of Main Street shops and restaurants open and welcoming the crowd.
It's the most casual way to experience the district: grab dinner from a street vendor, catch a band, duck into a gallery, and let the kids run. No tickets, no schedule — just show up.
Labor Day Weekend
Schooner Festival
Gloucester Harbor
Celebrating the "harbor" in Harbortown is always part of our mission. This Labor Day weekend event is a cultural touchpoint to America's oldest seaport and a vibrant part of our heritage. Run by our partners at Maritime Gloucester, the festival is the perfect end-to-summer treat.
The festival's highlight is the schooner race, a thrilling competition that showcases the speed and maneuverability of these historic vessels. Spectators line the harbor and the coast, witnessing the graceful schooners as they navigate the waters, their sails billowing against the backdrop of the picturesque Gloucester coastline. Beyond the races, the festival offers schooner tours, live music, and maritime-themed exhibits.

October
Cape Ann Plein Air
October 3–11, 2026 · Across Cape Ann · 10th Anniversary
The largest outdoor painting competition in New England and one of the top five in the country. Each October, 35 juried painters from around the world descend on Cape Ann to capture Gloucester, Rockport, Essex, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Ipswich en plein air — painting outdoors, on location, without photography or studio work — competing for over $20,000 in prizes.
The week features nightly Palate to Palette dinners pairing local restaurants with artists, paint-out demonstrations at the Cape Ann Museum, children's programming, and the crowd-favorite Quickdraw — a fast-paced competition where artists create a finished painting in just two hours. 2026 marks the festival's 10th anniversary.

Middle Street Walk
Second Saturday in December · Middle Street & Harbor Loop · Free
Gloucester's beloved holiday tradition turns the historic stretch of Middle Street into a daylong celebration of the season. Museums, churches, the Sawyer Free Library, and arts organizations along the route open their doors with holiday fairs, ornament-making workshops, cookie walks, sing-alongs, a children's choir concert, and tours of the area's historic buildings.
The day is capped by the Lobster Trap Tree Lighting at Harbor Loop — a towering tree built from lobster traps, lit as the community gathers at Solomon Jacobs Landing and Maritime Gloucester. A CATA shuttle runs between City Hall and Harbor Loop for the lighting ceremony.
